The City of Palms (Fort Myers)

Ponce de Leon explored Florida's Gulf Coast in 1513 & 1521, some of which was believed to be Lee County's barrier islands. While spanish settlers created refugee camps along the coast, Southwest Florida remained a rugged and isolated area until 1821 when Florida became US territory and the wave of incoming settlers demanded protection from the native Seminole indians, Fort Myers was built along the Calossahatchee River as an army base named after Colonel Abraham C. Myers - son-in-law of the Commander of Fort Brooke in Tampa.

After the southernmost battle in the Civil War occured in 1865, the fort itself was dismantled and part of the wood can still be seen in some of the earlier buildings in Downtown Fort Myers.  In 1885, inventor Thomas Alva Edison, inventor of many things but notoriely known for his invention of the Light Bulb, visited the area and fell in love building his lab and winter home along the Caloosahatchee River and what is now-known as McGregor Blvd. Edison was often joined by a good friend, Henry Ford who eventually bought the land adjacent to Edison's estate and opened the first Ford car dealership in Fort Myers in 1914.

Since the time of Edison and Ford, Fort Myers has blossomed and expanded from the simple village they loved to a bustling city, creating smaller towns such as North Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, and Lehigh Acres. Families are attracted to the area for it's mix of suburban and tropical tranquility and the convinence of a growing city and businesses view the area with the potential of expansion and growth. Fort Myers is home to the Boston Red Sox spring training camp known as Jet Blue Park, and also the Minnesota Twins who call Hammond Stadium home. Luxury buildings such as Oasis Grande, Rivieria, Beau Rivage, and St. Tropez line Downtown Fort Myers creating a perfect blend of old and new. Southwest Florida International Airport provides easy access to any major airport in the world, making travel a breeze.

Florida is known for tropical getaways and some of the best award-winning beaches call Southwest Florida home. Sanibel and Captiva Island bring crystal blue waters and white sandy beaches along with a tranquil breeze perfect for unwinding. Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and Naples beaches combine the best of both worlds - Beautiful water, sandy shorelines, dining and shopping galore where every member of your family can find something to peak their interest.
